Introduction:
Vermiculite is always used in the horticultural sector in its exfoliated form. It has the benefits of improving soil aeration while retaining moisture and nutrients to feed roots, cuttings, and seeds for faster, and maximum growth.
Vermiculite is a mineraloid composed of hydrated magnesium-aluminum-iron silicate. Chemically, it is composed of (Mg. Fe.. Fe..)3 [(Si Al)4O10][OH]24H2O. It expands (exfoliates)to a maximum of 30 times its original bulk volume when heated to 850-950°C.
When vermiculite expands, its color changes from golden brown to silver-white depending on its composition and temperature.
Exfoliated vermiculite size:
1. Exfoliated Vermiculite 1-3mm
2. Exfoliated Vermiculite 2-4mm
3. Exfoliated Vermiculite 3-6mm
Vermiculite Application:
Vermiculite is strong, clean, odorless, non-toxic, sterile, and will not deteriorate, mold or rot. It has cation exchange properties, allowing the use of ammonium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium for growing plants. When combined with other media such as peat or pine bark compost, it promotes faster root growth and allows young roots to settle quickly. The mixture helps retain air, plant foods, and moisture and releases them to plants as needed. Professional nurseries prefer this material for cutting roots. Vermiculite is used as a carrier and filler for fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. This is part of the standard mix used in the very popular Square Foot Gardening system.
